It’s the middle of the 2009-2010 television season and in this episode, James takes time to bid farewell to two of his favorite television shows: the USA Network’s juggernaut MONK, (buy it here – Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, Season4, Season 5, Season 6, Season 7, Season 8) and the horribly underrated “best show on television”, FOX’s animated series, King Of The Hill (buy it here – Seasons 1-6 (Box Set), Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, Season 4, Season 5, Season 6, Season 7, Season 8, Season 9, Season 10, Season 11, Season 12, Season 13). Finally, James gives his thoughts on the untimely death of actress (and phenomenal singer) Britanny Murphy (here’s a link where you can buy Jame’s two favorite movies with Brittany Murphy: Clueless – a modern retelling of Jane Austen’s classic “Emma” and Happy Feet – yeah… that one. She really gets to sing in this movie.) .

Update – 3am Ministries
MIA??? Gave up??? What’s up?!?!?
Hey everybody, this is James… not that you care, you’re reading so what difference does it make who did the typing, right?
Anyway, Bill and I just wanted to send out a blog update to let you know what’s going on. It’s been a couple of weeks since we released anything new and there are a few reasons for that, but we’ll get to that in a second.
First of all, The FAM Gathering on September the 19th was AWESOME! There will be a (short) show released this week with sound clips and some testimonials from the event.
Secondly, and more importantly, what’s going on with 3am Ministries? Why the radio silence?
Well, there are a LOT of reasons for our absence recently, but we first of all wanted to say that we are thankful to the people who have called in and written in to ask. That means, you’re listening and you care about what we are doing here. As to why we haven’t been recording, it has been, primarily, an issue of time. As most of you know, Bill and I have been going at this strong for about five months. We are in the infancy period of this ministry. What that means, essentially, is that we have not yet felt at a place where we could ask for or accept contributions or partnerships (SIDENOTE: There have been some people who have offered specific contributions for specific needs and as they always seemed to come at JUST the right time for what we needed – this website, for example, is the result of two of our FAMS contributing time (for development) and money (for domain hosting) – and we are more thankful for those people than words can convey.). “What does that have to do with recording shows?” you might ask… Well, that’s simple: Money. Bill and I have both been hard at work with some doors that have opened to us individually to obtain the means to make ends meet during this difficult, for lack of a more precise term, economic period.
That said, let’s be clear: Bill and I are not into 3am Ministries for the money!!! We simply have had a conflagration of scheduling nightmares that have prevented us from covering the miles between us (we live about an hour from each other) to get together to record.
Let’s get into some specifics…
I want to take a minute to brag on Bill a little bit… Not many people know that Bill is, among many things, a very talented writer. He writes songs, plays, ad copy, books, sermons… Oh, the list goes on and on… Right now Bill is, many nights, in rehearsals for a show that he wrote with Pastor Ken Hartley from Abba’s House in Hixson, TN for their Christmas production. This is going to be an awesome night, and I encourage all of you to check out the FB page for “16 Hours Till Christmas.”
I (James) have been working hard on various 3am related projects (see below), but, musically speaking, I have been very busy putting the (hopefully) finishing touches on the musical, Salome, I started writing almost nine years ago with my collaborator, Adam Steinberg. I covet your prayers as I prepare this piece for contest, competition and festival submission.
So, What About 3am???
Now, 3am Ministries, specifically, has some significant changes on the horizon. First of all, we have been working at getting to you guys LIVE! That’s right, L-I-V-E!!! One way we are considering this is the traditional radio route, but even closer is the 3amministries LIVE interactive experience! If you look to the right on this, and every page, you will see a window called “3am Ministries LIVE Feed.” Bill and I will be announcing (via Twitter and through our FB page) when we will be recording and you will be able to come here and interact with us live on our LIVE-INTERACTIVE page in our chat-room as we record the shows.
Additionally, we are expanding our content to include some “podcast-only” shows. Among these are some, for lack of a better word, “fan podcasts” of various television shows that have made their way onto the networks in the past couple of years and we feel merit a closer look than can be afforded to them in a normal “Art In Review” setting. To that end, we have in pre-production, AiR-Fringe, Air-Glee and AiR-Lost. Their are other shows under consideration, and if you have an idea for an AiR-______ show click here to fill out a suggestion form.
Also, we are putting some final touches on our partner program, “Awake at 3am.”
This program will listeners to make one-time or recurring donations or to join the partner program with access to exclusive members only content: for example, a podcast feed or web-based daily audio devotional led by myself (James), Bill or the both of us together, every episode of every show (some forthcoming shows will have only certain episodes released in the general feed), 3am Merchandise and more.
So, that’s what’s going on, FAMS. Thank you again for your faithfulness and for your support. Thank you most of all for your patience as we enter the next stage of 3am Ministries. Come with us and hear real conversations from real Christians… All You Have To Do Is Listen!!!

Listener feedback already!!! In this episode James responds spoiler reactions; to some comments made about the Michael Jackson Tribute show; discusses the exit of Paula Abdul from “American Idol“; and responds to some listener email questions. (Hints: Should Christians watch rated R movies? And just what is James’ favorite movie of all time?)

003 3AM Arts In Review – Movie Review: “Ice Age 3″ & “Knowing”
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
What do you do with Dinosaurs??? On a recent “Daddy/Daughters Date Night Extravaganza, I took my girls to see Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. It was neat to watch them identify the diferent kinds of dinos like they were old hands or something, and it was even more fun to laugh and joke with them at what was happening on the screen. But is this really a good movie for kids?
Knowing was a movie that completely blindsided me. There are some interesting biblical allusions and a lot of respect – remarkably a typical for Hollywood – given to the Christian worldview in this film.

Just the man and his music; no drama, no gossip, no weirdness.
I was encouraged by many people to go ahead and release this as an episode, so today I will discuss Michael Jackson and the influence his music had on my life. I cover various songs from “Off The Wall” “Thriller” “Bad” “Dangerous” as well as John Mayer’s stunning tribute from the Michael Jackson Memorial Service.

3AM Arts In Reivew – Welcome, WELCOME!!!
Hey there people who aren’t reading this yet (as I write it) but are reading it now (as you are now reading it)! I want to thank you for taking the time to listen and read (there will be much of the former but not too awful much of the latter, here). Don’t forget to call me @ 206-350-3331. You can give me questions, comments, thoughts, concerns, rants, show ideas, argue with me about my opinions… it’s all open here at 3am Arts in Review.
We still have a few months left of the summer movie explosion, so I will definitely be covering those goigns on. We’re looking soon for the return of some of my favorite summertime TV viewing (i.e. Psych and Monk in it’s final season) as well as following the shows that have already returned.
For those of you in the Southeastern TN region, I will be keeping a close eye on artistic happenings in the region, but if you think I am missing something let me know.
The inaugural episode has been recorded and will be released first (available for online listening and subscribing) but my first episode afterward will be my tribute to Michael Jackson. I know there are thousands upon thousands that might be created and released over the next year, but it’s important to me to do this now while the impact is fresh. After that, all bets are off.
I’m still looking for ideas about a movie rating system (listen to the inaugural episode for more details on that).
I look forward to reviewing and assisting, but, more than anything, I am really excited about discussing the arts in popular culture, their impact on society, their importance (or lack thereof) and how I as a Christian can benefit while being “in the world but not of it.”
See you guys soon!
